Mari State University has the following material and technical resources for physical activity:
- Mini- football field;
- Track and field complex;
- Two sandy courts for beach volleyball;
- Asphalt court for team sports;
- Gyms in academic building "B" include indoor courts for playing basketball and volleyball, fitness rooms, two exercise rooms for aerobics and a shooting range;
- In the academic building "P" there are three big exercise rooms, a gym and an aerobics hall, where various training activities are held;
- In addition, on the campus’ territory there are two ski centers (in campus building "D" and in the new academic building).
The education of masters of sports and champions is one of the goals of MARSU. Mari State University is proud of its graduates who have become permanent adherents of the sports which they have been doing since early childhood and who still support the sport's development.

Musa Galamov - a graduate of the Faculty of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism (2014): Master of Sports of Russia, European champion (2011) in Tatar-Bashkir wrestling, silver medalist of the World festival of arts in St. Petersburg (2013)
M.M. Polevschikov – Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism, professor - the world champion in badminton among veterans.
Dmitry Chekulaev – a multiple champion of the Mari El Republic in cross-country skiing.
The Centre for Sport and Physical activity in conjunction with the Faculty of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism carries out comprehensive work on the development of physical culture and sports, sport volunteering, and promoting a healthy lifestyle among students and university staff at MARSU.
Today MARSU offers the following sports classes:
Summer polyathlon – trainers: an honored trainer of the Republic of Mari El, the winner of the competition of Russian trainers, and an associate professor of physical culture, Gennady Shitukhin; a director of the sports school of track and field athletics, Alexey Grebnev; and an honored worker of physical culture of the Republic of Mari El, a judge of the international category on polyathlon, a member of the Russian Federation working group on development of the set of physical standards, an associate professor, and a candidate of pedagogical sciences, Tarikh Gilmutdinov.
Winter polyathlon – a master of sports on cross-country skiing and a senior lecturer of the department of physical culture, Dmitry Sergeyev.
SAMBO and hand-to-hand fighting has existed at Mari State University for 9 years. During this period, two masters of sports and more than ten rated sportsmen have been trained. Repeatedly, students have been champions and prize-winners of the republic, Volga federal district and Russian army hand-to-hand fight competitions, pankration, judo, and mixed fighting single combats. At present, about 60 people train in this sports club, which is headed by a candidate for a master of sports in SAMBO, an instructor of hand-to-hand fighting, and a senior lecturer of the Department of Physical Culture, Alexander Bastrakov.
Bullet shooting – the head is a coach of the highest category, Semyon Korenkov.
Victor Demakov, a master of sports in weightlifting, is the head of kettlebell lifting and powerlifting. The national team of Mari State University in kettlebell lifting is a multiple champion of the Mari El Republic. A student of the Faculty of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism, Olga Yandulina, is the record-holder of the republic in powerlifting.
Volleyball – the heads are senior lecturers of the department of physical culture, Lucia Schakirowa and Andrey Yakovenko.
Badminton – the heads are senior lecturers Olga Nikolaevna Ustymenko (Department of Sports Disciplines) and Nikolay Lyubushkin (Department of Physical Culture).
Football – the heads are Gennady Yarygin and Oleg Efremov. Lately, female football has also begun to develop.
Cross-country skiing – the head is an associate professor of the department of sports disciplines, a candidate of pedagogical sciences, Alexander Moskvichev.
Fitness aerobics – the heads are the members of the Federation of aerobics of Russia, the coaches of the Federation of aerobics of the Republic of Mari El, and senior lecturers of the Faculty of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism, Elena Boroukhina and Olga Demintseva.
Athletics – the head is an associate professor of the Department of Sports Disciplines, a candidate of pedagogical sciences, Alexandr Shalgin.
Basketball – the head is a senior lecturer of the department of physical culture, Elena Zlobina.
